Reading a rate-hike headline

Three questions before you get angry about it

Most utility-rate coverage mixes up three different numbers. Knowing which one you're reading is the difference between panic and a plan.

1

Is that a base-rate number or a bill number?

A utility can win a very large base-rate increase while the typical monthly bill moves a couple of dollars, because fuel costs move the other way. Both facts are true at once, and headlines usually pick the scarier one. Look for the dollars-per-month figure at 1,000 kWh.

2

Does it even apply to you?

Most Florida rate coverage is about FPL, because FPL is enormous. If you're in Cape Coral or most of Lee County you're on LCEC — a member-owned cooperative with its own board, its own rates, and its own net-metering rules. An FPL headline may not be your bill at all.

3

What's the multi-year path?

Settlements are usually four-year agreements with steps in later years, plus separate riders for new generation and storage. The first-year number is rarely the whole story — and the later years are the part worth planning around.
